Refurbishment of switchboards, distribution and specialist systems

Context

Buildings and outdoor areas of a large television production centre, with normal, essential and safety distribution systems, and a need to keep operations running without interruption.

Appointment

Construction design for the replacement and upgrading of floor switchboards, distribution networks, lighting and power installations, fire detection systems, data network, CCTV and the services for the outdoor areas and car parks.

Approach

Survey of the existing installation, reconstruction of the loads, definition of supply priorities, coordination of the works with the running of the facility, and preparation of the drawings needed for construction.

Outcome

A coordinated set of construction documents, bringing electrical distribution and specialist systems together while keeping disruption to the site to a minimum.

Due diligence and design of complex electrical installations

Context

Industrial and technology sites where continuity of service, reliability of supply and control over changes to the installation are essential requirements.

Appointment

Due diligence of the electrical installations and fire detection systems; review of single-line diagrams, switchboards, settings and protection coordination; design of new distribution, switchboards, busbar tap-offs and supplies for operational areas and technology loads.

Approach

Comparison between the available documentation and the installation as found, identification of technical and documentary shortcomings, analysis of the protective devices, and development of solutions ordered by safety, reliability and maintainability.

Outcome

A structured technical picture of the condition of the installations, and design work based on verifiable criteria that supports the planning of both operations and investment.

Power quality monitoring and analysis

Context

An institutional complex fed by an extensive distribution system, where the behaviour of the loads had to be understood and the causes of poor electrical conditions identified.

Appointment

A monitoring campaign on the main switchboards and analysis of the principal electrical parameters against the criteria of EN 50160.

Approach

Assessment of voltage trends, power factor, reactive energy and power, unbalance, harmonic distortion and load profiles. The data was read against the configuration of the installation and the way it is actually used.

Outcome

Identification of the operating conditions and of the main anomalies, together with the technical guidance needed to improve supply quality and the efficiency of the system.

Design and verification in highly critical environments

Context

Healthcare facilities where continuity of service and electrical safety have to be secured across rooms with different uses and different levels of risk.

Appointment

Design and verification of main switchboards, electrical distribution, normal and safety supplies, lighting and fire detection systems. Pre-commissioning work, documentary review and identification of non-conformities.

Approach

Classification of the rooms, analysis of the sources and distribution, verification of protection and discrimination, checks on the installation conditions, and comparison between design, documentation and the works as built.

Outcome

Early identification of the weak points and definition of the work needed to bring installation, documentation and safety requirements into line with one another.

Diagnostics and resolution of electrical faults

Context

Specialist equipment subject to nuisance tripping of the protective devices, leaving the machine unavailable and the cause hard to pin down.

Appointment

Analysis of leakage currents, verification of residual current device coordination, checks on the protective devices and earthing connections, and assessment of the suitability of the supply circuits.

Approach

Instrument measurements, reconstruction of the supply chain, and joint analysis of filter, machine, cables, interlocked sockets and protective devices, rather than assessing each component in isolation.

Outcome

The causes of the disruption were resolved by coordinating the protective devices correctly and by upgrading the unsuitable parts of the supply circuit.

Lighting calculations, definition of uniformity criteria and glare control, electrical sizing, and coordination with civil works, excavation, foundations and buried services.
